Notes
Privacy note
This site is run by private individuals in Gqeberha. We collect as little as a reply needs and we keep it for as short a time as is sensible. South African data protection law gives you rights over that information, and the paragraphs below set out how we handle it in practice.
Who is responsible
The site is kept by private individuals, not by a company, and it has no legal form behind it. Correspondence may be addressed to 22 Parliament Street, Central, Gqeberha 6001, or raised on the telephone number printed at the foot of every page.
There is no third party involved in deciding what happens to your information. The same people who write the entries read the form submissions and answer them.
What the form collects
The form asks for a name, a telephone number, a reply address, a subject and your message. Nothing else is collected automatically from the form itself, and there is no hidden field.
Please do not send identity numbers, bank details, licence numbers or medical information through the form. Nothing we do needs them, and if you send them we will delete them rather than file them.
Why we hold it, and on what basis
We use what you send only to answer you and, if the conversation becomes paid work from the rate card, to carry out that work and keep a record of what was agreed. We do not build profiles and we do not write to readers who have not asked to hear from us.
The legal basis is your consent, given by the tick box on the form, together with our legitimate interest in replying to correspondence sent to us. Consent may be withdrawn at any time by telephoning or writing to the address above.
How long it stays
Form submissions are deleted within twelve months of the conversation ending. Where paid work was done, the record of that work is kept for as long as any dispute could reasonably arise and is then destroyed.
Deleted means removed from the mailbox and from any working notes, including printed pages. We do not keep an archive copy for interest.
Who else sees it
Nobody. We do not sell, rent or share reader information, and we do not pass enquiries to stands, dealers, clubs or organisers. A reader may ask us to introduce them to somebody, and in that case we ask first and send only what the reader tells us to send.
The site is hosted on ordinary commercial hosting, and the people who run that infrastructure can technically reach the server as part of maintaining it. They are not given access to correspondence for any other purpose.
Security, in plain terms
Traffic to the site is encrypted. Correspondence sits in a password-protected mailbox with two-step sign-in, and working notes are kept on encrypted devices. Printed material is shredded rather than binned.
No arrangement is perfect. If something went wrong in a way that could affect you, we would tell you and the national data protection authority without waiting to be asked, and we would say plainly what had happened.
Your rights and how to use them
You may ask what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, ask for it to be deleted, object to our using it, or withdraw consent. Phone or write, and we will deal with it within a reasonable period and without charging you for a first request.
If our answer does not satisfy you, you may complain to the national information regulator, which handles data protection complaints in South Africa. You are not required to come back to us first, although it is usually quicker.
Children, and changes to this note
The site is written for adult drivers and we do not knowingly collect information from children. If a parent tells us that a child has sent us something, we will delete it on being asked.
When this note changes, the new version replaces the old one on this page and the change takes effect when it is published. Material changes will be flagged on the contact page for a while so that regular readers notice them.
